Champéry is one of the classic Swiss gateways to the Portes du Soleil, combining a traditional Valais village with direct access to one of the Alps’ largest cross-border ski areas. The village sits at around 1,050 m beneath the Dents du Midi. From the centre, the red-and-white cable car climbs roughly 900 vertical metres to Croix de Culet in under five minutes, putting skiers straight onto the Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil.
The full Portes du Soleil pass covers 600 km of skiing across 12 resorts in France and Switzerland. On the Swiss side, Champéry links with Les Crosets, Champoussin and Morgins, giving access to more than 100 km of terrain before even crossing the border. This makes Champéry particularly attractive to confident intermediates and mixed groups who want long touring days, varied pistes and the option to ski between countries. Expert skiers can also reach the famous Swiss Wall at Pas de Chavanette, one of the steepest ungroomed marked runs in the domain.
Champéry’s village character is a major part of the appeal. It is an established mountain community rather than a purpose-built ski station, with traditional chalets, restaurants and views towards the Dents du Midi. The trade-off is that the village itself is relatively low by Swiss ski-resort standards. Higher terrain around Les Crosets and Pointe des Mossettes reaches well above 2,000 m, but lower-altitude conditions can be more sensitive during mild periods.
Transport is unusually convenient for an Alpine village. Swiss Federal Railways connect Geneva and other major cities to Aigle; from there, the AOMC regional train runs directly through Monthey and the Val d’Illiez to Champéry. The terminus is beside the cable-car departure point, making it possible to arrive by train and transfer directly onto the mountain without a separate resort bus.
For skiers who want a characterful Swiss base, cross-border mileage and excellent public-transport access, Champéry is one of the most distinctive ways to experience the Portes du Soleil.
