Avoriaz is one of the most practical big-area ski bases in the French Alps. The resort sits at 1,800m in the Portes du Soleil and is completely car-free, so many stays are built around genuine ski-in/ski-out access rather than daily bus journeys. From the local slopes you can connect into a 600 km Franco-Swiss ski area linking 12 resorts, giving confident skiers plenty of scope for longer days without having to change accommodation.
For beginners, Avoriaz is more approachable than the scale of the Portes du Soleil might suggest. The Plateau area is designed for first turns, while the Lindarets sector gives improving skiers room to progress before tackling longer routes. Intermediates are particularly well served: there is enough local blue and red terrain for relaxed days, while stronger skiers can build touring days towards Châtel and the Swiss side. When crossing between sectors, keep an eye on weather, lift status and closing times rather than treating the whole linked area as one continuous piste network.
Avoriaz is also a standout choice for snowboarders and freestyle riders. Its four snowparks include The Stash in the Lindarets forest, the family-friendly Lil’Stash, La Chapelle and the more advanced Arare park. Families benefit from the traffic-free centre, short journeys between accommodation and slopes, and beginner-friendly areas, although the exact location of ski-school meeting points is worth checking before you book.
The main practical trade-off is the car-free layout. Cars stop outside the resort, so check how you will complete the final journey from the main welcome area or the Prodains cable car to your accommodation, especially if you are travelling with children or ski bags. Avoriaz is purpose-built rather than a traditional chalet village, which divides opinion, but for skiers who value snow reliability, slope access and a huge variety of terrain, it is one of the strongest all-round choices in the Portes du Soleil.
