La Plagne is one of the largest and most versatile ski resorts in the French Alps, with a network of high-altitude resort villages, traditional lower villages and direct access to the wider Paradiski domain. Current official information gives La Plagne 225 km of pistes, 139 runs and 77 lifts, with skiing from 1,250 m to 3,080 m. More than 70% of the ski area lies above 2,000 m, giving the resort a strong high-altitude profile for a conventional December-to-April winter season.
The local terrain suits a very wide range of skiers. Beginners have dedicated learning zones, snow gardens and easy pistes around several village bases, while intermediates can spend days exploring the extensive blue and red network. Stronger skiers have black pistes, steeper upper-mountain terrain and access to marked ski routes. La Plagne also has family fun areas, the Riders Nation snowpark, two boardercross courses and a substantial cross-country network.
The resort’s geography is a major part of the experience. La Plagne is not one single village. High-altitude bases include Plagne Centre, Belle Plagne, Plagne Bellecôte, Plagne 1800, Aime 2000, Plagne Soleil and Plagne Villages, while lower and more traditional bases include Montalbert, Montchavin-Les Coches and Champagny-en-Vanoise. This variety allows travellers to choose between ski-in/ski-out convenience, quieter village atmosphere and different slope orientations.
Paradiski expands the skiing dramatically. La Plagne connects with Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry to create 425 km of linked pistes. The key connection is the Vanoise Express between Montchavin-Les Coches and Plan Peisey. Its double-deck cabins cross the Ponthurin valley in under four minutes, making a full Paradiski day realistic for confident skiers who plan their route and lift-closing times carefully.
Altitude is another strong point. The highest lift-served skiing reaches 3,080 m at Glaciers 2, while major upper sectors such as Roche de Mio, Grande Rochette and Verdons offer blue and red terrain above 2,500 m. The lower villages and valley runs are naturally more sensitive during warm periods, but the combination of high terrain and multiple slope aspects gives skiers flexibility across the day.
Rail access is unusually well organised for such a large resort. Aime-la-Plagne station serves Montalbert and most high-altitude La Plagne villages, Landry is the recommended station for Montchavin-Les Coches, and Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains serves Champagny-en-Vanoise. Regional buses and taxis continue from each station. Winter airport shuttles also operate from Lyon to La Plagne and from Geneva to Aime-la-Plagne, with onward connections.
The main compromise is scale: moving between some villages takes time, and a full Paradiski day requires planning. For families, intermediates and mixed groups who want extensive high-altitude terrain, multiple village styles and one of France’s largest linked ski areas, La Plagne is one of the most complete choices in the Tarentaise.
