Crans-Montana sits on a sunny plateau above the Rhône Valley in Valais, Switzerland, and combines a substantial ski area with the facilities of a year-round mountain town. The official ski area covers 140 km of marked pistes between about 1,500 and 3,000 m, served by 24 lifts. Much of the terrain is south-facing, with broad, open pistes and panoramic views across the Valais Alps.
For skiers, the resort is especially appealing to intermediates and mixed-ability groups, while beginners have dedicated learning terrain and stronger skiers can seek out steeper World Cup runs. The high-altitude sector around Plaine Morte adds a different feel, and the ski area includes freestyle terrain, mountain restaurants and a long descent back towards the resort.
Crans-Montana also works well for travellers who want more than skiing. Crans and Montana together offer restaurants, shopping, winter walking, wellness and other winter activities, so non-skiers have more to do than in a small purpose-built resort. Access is practical by Swiss public transport: trains run to Sierre, with the funicular continuing up to the resort. Geneva is a major international gateway, while Zurich, Basel and Milan can also be compared depending on flight availability and transfer preferences.
