Bardonecchia is a historic ski town in Piedmont’s upper Susa Valley, close to the French border and unusually easy to reach from Turin. The town sits at 1,312 m and combines a genuine year-round community with more than 100 km of ski slopes. It is a separate ski destination from the lift-linked Vialattea, despite the current Vialattea // Bardo partnership and shared regional branding.
The ski area is divided between two contrasting sectors. Colomion–Les Arnauds–Melezet starts around 1,330 m at Campo Smith and rises towards Vallon Cros, with broad pistes through the trees and terrain for beginners through to experienced skiers. Jafferau, reached from the town side and served by a free shuttle connection, climbs to around 2,800 m and offers a more open, high-mountain character above the treeline. Together they give Bardonecchia more variety than its compact town setting might suggest.
Bardonecchia has strong sporting credentials. The resort hosted the snowboard competitions during the Torino 2006 Winter Olympics, and freestyle remains part of its identity. The ski area also promotes snowpark facilities, ski and snowboard schools and a large instructor network, making it suitable for families and progression as well as confident skiers.
The town itself is one of Bardonecchia’s biggest advantages. Unlike a purpose-built resort, it has a railway station, shops, restaurants and everyday local life alongside the ski infrastructure. That also makes car-free travel unusually practical. Official resort information lists trains from Turin at around one hour, while Turin Caselle Airport is approximately one hour away by road. Milan’s airports are further away at around two hours.
The main compromise is that the two ski sectors are not one continuous lift-linked mountain, so moving between them may involve local transport. Bardonecchia also offers less total mileage than the nearby Vialattea. For families, intermediates and groups who value straightforward Turin access, an authentic Italian town and a mix of wooded and high-altitude skiing, it is a particularly practical Alpine base.
