Turin Airport (TRN) is one of the strongest gateways to the western Italian Alps, with practical access to Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx, Bardonecchia and the wider Via Lattea ski area.

Turin Airport (TRN), also known as Torino Caselle, is one of the most useful gateways for ski trips into the western Italian Alps. Its position north of Turin gives direct road access towards the A32 Turin–Bardonecchia motorway and the A5 towards the Aosta Valley, while the airport’s smaller scale can make arrivals simpler than at larger Milan hubs. For travellers focused on Piedmont, Via Lattea and Bardonecchia are the clearest ski destinations.
Via Lattea is the airport’s strongest major-resort connection. The ski area identifies Turin-Caselle as its closest airport and gives Sestriere at about 90 km with a transfer of just under two hours. Via Lattea links Sestriere with Sauze d’Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana and Claviere on the Italian side, with Montgenèvre across the French border. For a road-based ski holiday, this gives TRN excellent access to a large cross-border ski region without first travelling through central Milan.
Bardonecchia is similarly practical. The resort gives Turin Caselle as its closest airport at about 95 km. It is also served by the Turin–Bardonecchia–Modane railway line, making it one of the more realistic western Italian ski destinations for travellers who prefer not to hire a car. Local buses in Bardonecchia provide onward connections around the resort once visitors arrive.
Public transport from the airport is unusually useful. The railway station sits directly opposite Arrivals and trains reach Torino Porta Susa in about 30 minutes, seven days a week. From Turin, travellers can continue by rail towards Oulx or Bardonecchia. Via Lattea gives the Turin–Oulx rail journey at about 1½ hours, followed by a regular bus from Oulx to Sestriere taking around 30 minutes. This route takes longer than a private transfer but offers a practical car-free option.
For travellers who want maximum flexibility, numerous car-hire companies operate from the Arrivals area and adjacent multi-storey car park. Winter drivers should check road conditions, snow equipment and cross-border requirements before travelling. Overall, TRN is strongest for Sestriere, Sauze d’Oulx, Bardonecchia and the wider western Piedmont ski region, where its location can keep airport-to-resort travel considerably simpler than routing through a more distant hub.
