Mürren is one of Switzerland’s most distinctive ski villages, perched at 1,650 m above the Lauterbrunnen Valley and completely car-free. The local Mürren–Schilthorn ski area currently offers 53 km of pistes served by 13 lifts, with skiing from about 1,645 m to 2,960 m. The terrain is compact compared with the full Jungfrau Ski Region, but its vertical, steep upper mountain and dramatic views towards the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau give it a strong identity of its own.
The ski area is particularly attractive to confident intermediates and advanced skiers. Higher runs around Birg and the Schilthorn provide the most demanding terrain, while lower sectors around Allmendhubel, Winteregg and Gimmeln add easier pistes and family options. The famous Inferno route is another defining feature: the amateur Inferno race has been held since 1928, and its 14.9 km course can normally be skied outside race periods when conditions allow.
Mürren is also part of the wider Jungfrau Ski Region. The regional ski pass covers 211 km across Mürren, Grindelwald and Wengen, although the Mürren–Schilthorn sector is geographically separate from the Grindelwald–Wengen slopes rather than connected by pistes. That distinction matters for holiday planning: Mürren works best as a high-character local base, with other Jungfrau areas reached by public transport rather than as one continuous ski circuit.
Access is unusually good for a car-free mountain village. From Lauterbrunnen, a cable car climbs to Grütschalp and the narrow-gauge mountain railway continues via Winteregg to Mürren. A second route now runs directly from Stechelberg to Mürren on the world’s steepest cable car, opened in December 2024. It climbs 775 vertical metres at gradients up to 159.4% and reaches the village in just four minutes. The new Schilthorn lift system was completed in April 2026, with both Funifor lines operating between Birg and the 2,970 m Schilthorn summit.
The village itself is a major reason to stay. Traditional chalets, mountain hotels, pedestrian lanes and uninterrupted views create a peaceful atmosphere that feels very different from a purpose-built resort. The trade-off is scale and logistics: there is less local piste mileage and less nightlife than in larger destinations, and reaching other Jungfrau ski sectors takes additional travel.
For skiers who value scenery, car-free village character, challenging Schilthorn terrain and outstanding public-transport access more than maximum piste mileage, Mürren is one of the most memorable bases in the Bernese Oberland.
