Hintertux is one of Austria’s best-known glacier ski bases, set at the head of the Tux Valley with lift access from around 1,500 m to 3,250 m. In the main glacier season, official resort information lists up to 64 km of slopes between the valley station and the Gefrorene Wand. The altitude and glacier terrain make Hintertux particularly attractive for autumn, spring and early-summer skiing, race training and trips where snow reliability is a priority.
During winter, the choice expands through Ski & Glacier World Zillertal 3000. The combined network offers up to 206 km of pistes across Hintertux Glacier, Eggalm, Rastkogel, Finkenberg, Penken/Mayrhofen and Ahorn. It is important not to treat all 206 km as one seamless piste-linked circuit: Hintertux and Eggalm are connected by ski bus, while other sectors are linked in different ways. The broader pass nevertheless gives holidaymakers much more variety than the glacier alone.
The glacier itself is best suited to intermediates and stronger skiers who enjoy wide high-altitude pistes and long vertical descents. The official Glacier Circuit covers around 60 km of skiing and more than 15,000 vertical metres in a day, illustrating how much terrain can be covered without needing a huge local piste count. Higher sectors also offer extensive views across the Zillertal Alps.
Hintertux village is small and quiet compared with Mayrhofen, which is an advantage for travellers who prefer an early-start ski base but a limitation for anyone looking for a large après-ski scene. Non-ski attractions include the glacier’s panoramic lifts and high-mountain visitor experiences, while the wider Tux Valley adds winter walking, cross-country skiing and traditional Tyrolean mountain huts.
Access is straightforward but involves travelling deep into the Zillertal. Innsbruck is the closest airport at about 95 km; Munich is around 216 km and Salzburg about 192 km. By rail, travellers take mainline services to Jenbach, continue on the Zillertalbahn to Mayrhofen and then use bus 4104 directly to Hintertux.
The main compromise is resort atmosphere and distance from the major transport hubs. For skiers prioritising altitude, glacier terrain, an extended ski season and the option to add the wider Zillertal network in winter, Hintertux remains one of Austria’s most distinctive ski bases.
