More about Bad Gastein

Bad Gastein is one of Austria’s most distinctive ski towns, combining a dramatic Belle Époque spa resort with direct access to the Gastein ski region. The town sits at around 1,000 m in the Hohe Tauern and is built steeply around its famous waterfall. Its railway station is unusually convenient for a ski destination: a weather-protected overpass leads directly towards both the Felsentherme thermal spa and the Stubnerkogelbahn valley station.

The wider Gastein ski region offers around 200 km of pistes across four ski areas. From Bad Gastein, the main lift-linked option is the Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel area, the largest connected ski area in the valley, with terrain for beginners through to advanced skiers. Angertal provides dedicated learning areas, while Stubnerkogel and Schlossalm offer long cruising runs, panoramic slopes and more challenging descents.

Stronger skiers also have two distinctive alternatives nearby. Sportgastein is the highest ski area in Ski amadé, with 24 km of pistes between 1,590 and 2,650 m and three official freeride ski routes. Graukogel offers a smaller, more old-school experience with natural-snow terrain and 14 km of pistes that particularly suit confident skiers.

Bad Gastein’s non-ski appeal is unusually strong. The 341 m waterfall drops through the centre of town in three stages, while the historic buildings and mountain setting give the resort a character very different from a purpose-built ski village. Felsentherme, at around 1,100 m, uses thermal water from 17 natural springs and provides a genuine spa option directly beside the station.

Access is another advantage. Bad Gastein has direct long-distance rail connections from cities including Salzburg, Vienna, Munich and Frankfurt. Salzburg Airport is the nearest airport, with official resort information putting the onward journey at about 1½ hours.

The main compromise is layout: the steep town is less compact and less straightforward on foot than a conventional slopeside village. For skiers who value varied terrain, rail access, spa culture and a memorable historic setting, Bad Gastein offers a combination that is difficult to match.

Why choose Bad Gastein?

Distinctive historic spa town, varied Gastein skiing, high-altitude Sportgastein, excellent rail access, direct Stubnerkogel lift connection and strong non-ski appeal.

Things to know

The town is steep and spread across the valley side, so getting around on foot can be less convenient than in a compact ski-in/ski-out village.
