Excellent East Kootenay gateway. Kimberley Alpine Resort is about 20 mins from YXC, Fernie about 1¼ hrs, and Panorama is 161 km away. Rental cars and pre-arranged resort shuttles serve Kimberley, Fernie and the Columbia Valley; some shuttle services require advance booking.
Canadian Rockies International Airport (YXC), near Cranbrook in British Columbia’s East Kootenay region, is one of the most ski-focused regional airports in western Canada. Its main advantage is location: travellers can land much closer to several Powder Highway destinations than they would when starting from Calgary or Vancouver. For ski trips centred on Kimberley, Fernie or the Columbia Valley, that can significantly reduce the final road journey.
Kimberley Alpine Resort is the closest major ski area to YXC. The resort places the airport approximately 20 minutes away and promotes private airport-shuttle services directly from Cranbrook. That makes Kimberley an especially strong option for a short-transfer ski break, with no need to cross a major mountain pass on the final approach.
Fernie Alpine Resort is farther south-east but still a very practical YXC transfer. Fernie gives the journey from Canadian Rockies International Airport as about 1.25 hours by road. The airport’s own ground-transport directory lists operators offering private or shared services between YXC and Fernie, and Tourism Fernie also identifies Cranbrook airport as a year-round shuttle gateway. Travellers should reserve in advance where required because some services operate only when bookings meet the operator’s conditions.
Panorama Mountain Resort is another realistic option from YXC. Panorama lists Canadian Rockies International Airport at 161 km from the resort, much closer than Calgary International Airport at 311 km. Ground transport from YXC is generally by rental car or pre-arranged private transfer rather than a frequent public airport coach, so this route rewards advance planning.
At the terminal, travellers can choose from rental cars, taxis and several resort-transfer companies serving Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie and the Columbia Valley. A car gives the most flexibility for a multi-resort trip, but winter conditions can be demanding and drivers should check road reports, tyre requirements and weather before setting out. YXC is therefore strongest for travellers prioritising short regional transfers and direct access to the East Kootenays rather than the wider flight choice available at Calgary.
