Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is British Columbia’s main international gateway for ski travel and the most important airport for many Whistler trips. Its extensive domestic and long-haul flight network gives travellers far more choice than smaller regional airports, while direct coaches, rental cars, rapid transit and private transfers make it practical for both destination ski holidays and shorter Vancouver-based mountain days.
Whistler is the headline ski route from YVR. Tourism Whistler places Vancouver International Airport about 140 km from Whistler, with a typical journey of around 2½ hours. YVR itself currently lists frequent daily SkyLynx coaches running directly from the airport along the Sea-to-Sky corridor to Squamish, Creekside and Whistler. Tourism Whistler notes that airport-to-Whistler coach journeys can take up to three hours depending on traffic and road conditions, so travellers should leave sensible margins around flights and onward bookings.
For shorter ski days, Vancouver’s North Shore mountains are another reason YVR works well. Cypress Mountain can be reached by road from Vancouver and operates a private winter shuttle from city pick-up points. Travellers arriving at YVR can use the Canada Line to reach downtown Vancouver in under 30 minutes before connecting with city-based transport, or hire a car for greater flexibility. Cypress requires winter tyres on Cypress Bowl Road from 1 October to 30 April.
Self-drive is straightforward from the airport. Avis, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty currently operate on-site, with their facilities on the ground floor of the parkade only steps from the terminal. Uber and Lyft are also authorised for airport pick-up. Drivers heading north should remember that winter tyres or chains are required on many British Columbia routes from 1 October into March or April, depending on the highway, and Sea-to-Sky conditions can change quickly during storms.
YVR is therefore strongest for Whistler and Vancouver-area skiing rather than every resort in British Columbia. For more distant Interior destinations such as Big White or Sun Peaks, regional airports can reduce the road transfer, but YVR remains the province’s most connected choice when international flight availability and a direct Whistler route matter most.
