About Kamloops Airport for ski trips

Kamloops Airport (YKA) is one of British Columbia’s most useful regional ski gateways, particularly for travellers heading to Sun Peaks and the Thompson region. Its main advantage is a short, ski-relevant final transfer rather than the larger flight network available at Vancouver or Calgary. For a trip centred on Sun Peaks, arriving at YKA can significantly reduce the road journey and make the first and last day of the holiday much easier.

Sun Peaks Resort is the airport’s clearest ski connection. The resort identifies Kamloops Airport as its primary airport and places it approximately 45 minutes away. Sun Peaks lists several private and shared shuttle operators serving YKA, including TasteFull Excursions, Sun Star Shuttle and Peak Shuttles. Advance booking is required for these services, so travellers should arrange transport before flying rather than assuming a vehicle will be waiting on arrival.

Kamloops Airport’s own ground-transport directory supports the same route choices. It lists taxis, rideshare, limousine services, rental cars and regional shuttle operators, including services used for Sun Peaks travel. Budget, Enterprise and National are among the rental-car companies operating at YKA. Public transit is less useful for airport arrivals because BC Transit does not currently serve the terminal directly; the nearest regular bus stop is about 3 km away.

Travellers spending time in Kamloops also have another local ski option at Harper Mountain. Tourism Kamloops describes Harper as a family-owned ski hill about 20 minutes from Kamloops, with more than 400 acres of terrain, night skiing, tubing and cross-country skiing. It is a smaller experience than Sun Peaks but can work well as an additional ski day for visitors based in the city.

Winter road conditions in the BC Interior can change quickly, so anyone hiring a car should check weather, road reports and vehicle suitability before setting out. YKA is therefore strongest for travellers whose main destination is Sun Peaks or the Kamloops area, where its compact terminal and short onward journey offer a genuine advantage over larger, more distant airports.
