Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is one of the most useful international gateways for ski trips into the eastern Dolomites. Its strongest advantage is not simply the size of the airport, but the number of onward options available for mountain destinations in Veneto and neighbouring Dolomite valleys. Cortina d’Ampezzo, Arabba, Marmolada, Alleghe, Falcade and Val di Zoldo can all be reached using road, coach or seasonal ski-transfer services from the Venice area.
Cortina d’Ampezzo is the clearest resort connection from VCE. The official Cortina tourism service places Venice Marco Polo about 162 km away, while the airport itself lists direct ATVO and Cortina Express bus services between the terminal and Cortina. This gives travellers a realistic car-free option in winter, although journey times depend on traffic and mountain-road conditions.
Venice is also a useful gateway for the central-eastern Dolomites. During the winter season, the Dolomiti Ski Shuttle connects Marco Polo Airport with destinations including Arabba, Marmolada, Alleghe, Falcade, Canale d’Agordo, Selva di Cadore and Val di Zoldo. Arabba’s official tourism information specifically identifies Venice and Treviso as important arrival airports and highlights the winter shuttle service as a direct connection to the resort area.
For travellers heading farther west, Venice can still work, but alternatives may be more convenient. Val Gardena, for example, lists Venice Marco Polo at around 270 km, compared with 190 km from Verona and 120 km from Innsbruck. That makes VCE a valid option when flights or fares are particularly good, but not automatically the shortest gateway for every Dolomites destination.
Ground transport at Marco Polo includes rental cars, taxis, buses and private transfers. Car-hire companies operate from the P1 multi-storey car park, giving flexibility for multi-resort trips. In winter, drivers should check snow conditions, tyre requirements and pass closures before setting out. For Cortina and the eastern Dolomites, however, VCE remains one of the strongest airport choices thanks to its direct public and seasonal ski-transfer links.
