Sydney Airport (SYD) is New South Wales’ main international gateway for ski trips to the Snowy Mountains. It is not close to the ski fields, but its extensive domestic and international flight network makes it a practical starting point for travellers who value flight choice or are combining a snow trip with time in Sydney. From the airport, the usual onward options are rental car, coach or a transfer into central Sydney before joining a snow service south.
Perisher is one of the main routes from SYD. The resort currently gives the drive from Sydney at about 5½ hours. For travellers who prefer not to drive all the way into the national park, Bullocks Flat provides free day and overnight parking and access to Skitube, which reaches Perisher Valley in about 10 minutes. Perisher also lists direct coach services from Sydney and Canberra to Jindabyne and Bullocks Flat, including new FlixBus routes introduced for the 2026 season, alongside Greyhound and specialist snow operators.
Thredbo is a similar distance. The resort places Sydney at roughly 5½ hours by road and Canberra at around 2½ hours. That comparison is important: Canberra Airport can be the more efficient choice when a suitable flight is available and the Snowy Mountains are the only destination, while SYD remains stronger for international connectivity and broader flight choice. Private coaches and transfers also operate between Sydney, Canberra, Jindabyne and Thredbo.
Sydney Airport makes self-drive trips straightforward, with Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget, Thrifty and Enterprise among the rental-car companies operating from the terminal precincts. Airport Link trains connect the airport with central Sydney, which is useful for travellers joining coaches from the city rather than collecting a car.
Winter driving rules need particular attention. During the NSW snow season, 2WD vehicles must carry snow chains on specified roads in Kosciuszko National Park, including Kosciuszko Road towards Perisher and sections of Alpine Way used for Thredbo access. Road closures, snow and peak-day traffic can all extend journey times. SYD is therefore best treated as a high-connectivity gateway to the Snowy Mountains rather than a short-transfer ski airport.
