Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN), in Hailey, is the closest and most convenient airport for a ski trip to Sun Valley. The airport itself places Sun Valley about 13 miles to the north, while Sun Valley Resort gives the distance as 14 miles and describes the journey as roughly 25 minutes. For travellers whose priority is getting from aircraft to accommodation and ski lifts with minimal road time, SUN has a clear advantage over larger Idaho gateways farther away.
The ground-transport options are unusually good for a small mountain airport. Mountain Rides introduced a free dedicated airport shuttle in June 2026, linking Friedman Memorial with key stops in Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley, including Sun Valley Lodge. The wider Mountain Rides network is also free and connects Sun Valley Village, Ketchum, Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain. This makes a genuinely car-free Sun Valley ski trip possible for many visitors.
Sun Valley Resort also provides complimentary airport transportation for guests staying at the resort. Reservations are required to guarantee a seat, so this should be arranged before arrival. Travellers who want more flexibility can choose from rental cars, taxis, private shuttles and hotel courtesy vehicles listed by the airport. Car hire can be useful for exploring the wider Wood River Valley, but it is not essential for a straightforward resort-based stay.
SUN is a regional mountain airport, so flight choice is smaller than at major hubs and winter weather can occasionally affect operations. Boise is the main larger-airport alternative; Sun Valley Resort gives the drive from Boise at about two and a half hours. That can make BOI worth comparing when fares or schedules are substantially better, but it cannot match SUN’s very short final transfer.
For a trip focused specifically on Sun Valley, Ketchum, Bald Mountain or Dollar Mountain, Friedman Memorial is therefore the strongest airport choice when suitable flights are available. Its combination of close proximity, free public transport and resort shuttles gives this airport one of the easiest ski arrivals in Idaho.
