About Reno–Tahoe International Airport for ski trips

Reno–Tahoe International Airport (RNO) is the main commercial air gateway for ski trips around Lake Tahoe and one of the most convenient mountain airports in the western United States. Its location on the Nevada side of the Sierra puts several major resorts within roughly an hour of the terminal, while dedicated airport shuttles, rental cars, taxis and private transfers make both the north and south shores practical without travelling through a distant city.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe is the closest major ski area to RNO. The resort places the airport just 22 miles away and describes itself as about 25 minutes from Reno. This makes Mt. Rose particularly useful for short ski breaks or arrival-day skiing, weather and road conditions permitting. Its high base elevation and location on the Mt. Rose Highway also mean travellers should pay close attention to winter road reports before driving.

Northstar California is another straightforward airport transfer. Northstar gives Reno–Tahoe International at roughly 40 minutes and currently recommends the reservation-based North Lake Tahoe Express, which operates scheduled service between RNO, Truckee and North Lake Tahoe. Palisades Tahoe is similarly close: the resort gives the drive from RNO at about 45 minutes and also recommends North Lake Tahoe Express for travellers who do not want to hire a car.

For South Lake Tahoe, Heavenly is typically around 1 hour 5 minutes from Reno Airport depending on traffic and weather. Heavenly recommends South Tahoe Airporter, which currently runs multiple daily departures from RNO to major South Shore hotels near the Heavenly Village and Stateline area. This creates a realistic car-free route for many Heavenly stays.

RNO itself lists both North Lake Tahoe Express and South Tahoe Airporter in its ground-transport options, alongside rideshare, taxis, limousines and rental cars. A rental car gives the most flexibility for combining resorts, but Sierra winter conditions can bring chain controls, snow-covered highways and long delays. Overall, RNO is strongest as a true Lake Tahoe ski gateway: close enough for short resort transfers while offering transport choices for Mt. Rose, Northstar, Palisades Tahoe, Heavenly and the wider Tahoe region.
