Shinshu Matsumoto Airport (MMJ) is a compact regional gateway for ski trips into Nagano and the Japanese Alps. Its main advantage is location: travellers arriving at Matsumoto can start their mountain journey without first crossing Tokyo or Nagoya, which can make sense when the airport’s domestic flight schedule matches the trip. The airport is also well connected to Matsumoto city, with the direct airport shuttle reaching Matsumoto Bus Terminal in about 30 minutes.
Hakuba is the strongest ski-transfer story from MMJ. Matsumoto Airport currently publishes a fully reservable shuttle service from the terminal towards Hakuba Station, Hakuba Iwatake Mountain Resort, Tsugaike Kogen, Omachi and Azumino. Reservations can be made from two months before travel until noon on the day before, and the service does not operate if there are no bookings. That gives skiers a direct alternative to routing via Tokyo when suitable flights into Matsumoto are available.
Norikura is another useful local option. The airport gives Norikura Kogen at about 1 hour 20 minutes by taxi. Matsumoto’s official tourism service describes Mt. Norikura Snow Resort as a 20-course ski area reaching 1,990 metres, with around 500 metres of vertical and a longest run of 5,000 metres. Public transport is also possible from Matsumoto Station via Shin-Shimashima, although winter timetables and any seasonal shuttle services should be checked before travel.
For travellers hiring a car, MMJ is close to the regional road network and the airport lists rental-car and taxi services alongside its buses. Winter driving in Nagano can involve heavy snow, icy roads and mountain conditions, so appropriate winter tyres and current road information are important.
MMJ is therefore strongest for travellers whose itinerary is focused on Hakuba, Norikura, Matsumoto and the central Japanese Alps, especially when a direct domestic flight works well. Its flight network is smaller than Tokyo Haneda, Narita or Chubu Centrair, so those larger airports may still be better when schedule flexibility or international connections matter more than the shorter regional transfer.
