Airport overview
Memmingen Airport (FMM) is a useful ski gateway for the Allgäu and western Austria, with direct bus access towards Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal plus practical road links to the Arlberg.

Strong for Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal, with a direct FlixBus via Memmingen Airport continuing to Oberstdorf, Riezlern, Hirschegg and Mittelberg. Lech Zürs is about 167 km from FMM. Car hire, taxis, rail connections and airport buses are also available.
Memmingen Airport (FMM), also known as Allgäu Airport, is a useful regional gateway for ski trips into southern Germany and western Austria. Its position close to the A7 and A96 motorways places travellers on the right side of Munich for the Allgäu, Oberstdorf, Kleinwalsertal and parts of Vorarlberg. FMM is a smaller airport than Munich or Zurich, but for the right flight it can provide a simpler arrival and a shorter regional journey towards the mountains.
Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal form the strongest ski-access story from Memmingen. Oberstdorf tourism currently confirms a direct FlixBus connection that runs from Munich via Memmingen Airport, Memmingen, Kempten and Oberstdorf. Kleinwalsertal tourism confirms that the same direct service continues into the Austrian valley with stops in Riezlern, Hirschegg and Mittelberg. This is particularly useful for skiers because the wider Oberstdorf-Kleinwalsertal ski area offers around 130 km of pistes across Germany and Austria, and local buses connect the valley communities and ski areas.
Lech Zürs is a more distant but still realistic option by road. Current Lech Zürs tourism information places Memmingen Airport at about 167 km from the resort. Innsbruck, Friedrichshafen and Altenrhein are closer to Lech, so FMM should be compared with those airports when the Arlberg is the only destination. Memmingen becomes more attractive when its flight schedule or fare is substantially better, or when the trip also includes the Allgäu.
Ground transport at FMM is well developed for a compact airport. The Memmingen Airport City Shuttle runs approximately every 30 minutes between the terminal and Memmingen railway station, while FlixBus and the Allgäu Airport Express also stop directly outside the terminal. Rental-car companies including Avis/Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Sixt and Hertz operate from the car-hire centre opposite the terminal, and taxis wait outside the entrance.
Winter drivers should check road conditions, snow equipment and cross-border requirements before travelling. FMM is therefore strongest for Allgäu and Kleinwalsertal ski trips, with useful onward reach into Vorarlberg and the Arlberg rather than being presented as the nearest airport to every western Alpine resort.
