Official Montafon tourism information places Friedrichshafen Airport at about 100 km and roughly one hour away, with onward travel possible by train, car or taxi. The valley gives access to several ski areas and villages, including Schruns, Silvretta Montafon and Gargellen, making FDH particularly relevant for travellers planning a Vorarlberg-based ski trip.
Lech Zürs is another major option. The resort lists Friedrichshafen at approximately 130 km and around 1 hour 45 minutes by road. St. Anton am Arlberg is slightly farther, at about 140 km from the airport. These distances make FDH a credible alternative to Innsbruck, Zurich or Munich for Arlberg trips when flight times and fares work well, although the larger airports may offer a wider choice of services.
Ground transport from Bodensee-Airport includes rental cars with desks inside the terminal, as well as bus and rail connections and a FlixBus stop at the airport. For many ski travellers, a hire car offers the greatest flexibility, especially for multi-resort itineraries or accommodation away from main rail corridors. Public transport can also work, but mountain journeys normally require changes and should be planned against current winter timetables.
Cross-border driving adds a few practical considerations. Travellers entering Austria should check motorway vignette requirements, winter-tyre rules, snow conditions and any local chain requirements before setting out. FDH is therefore best viewed as a compact regional gateway with genuinely useful access to Vorarlberg and the Arlberg rather than as the closest airport to every Alpine resort.
