New Chitose Airport (CTS) is Hokkaido’s main aviation gateway and one of Japan’s most useful airports for ski trips. Its combination of domestic and international flights, on-airport rail and extensive winter ground transport makes it the natural starting point for many journeys to Niseko, Rusutsu, Tomamu, Kiroro and Furano. For travellers arriving from overseas, CTS can also remove the need to connect through Tokyo when a direct Hokkaido flight is available.
Niseko is one of the airport’s best-established ski routes. Niseko United’s last published winter timetable included reservation-only direct buses from New Chitose Airport to Annupuri, Niseko Village and Hirafu, with journeys of roughly three to three and a half hours depending on the stop. Other operators also serve the corridor. These services are seasonal, so travellers should check the current winter timetable before choosing a flight around a specific bus.
Rusutsu is closer. The resort’s own BIGRUNS airport bus takes about two hours between New Chitose and Rusutsu, with multiple winter departures in the last published ski-season schedule. Tomamu offers a different advantage: Hoshino Resorts gives the journey from New Chitose at about 90 minutes by rail with one change at Minami-Chitose, or around 90–100 minutes by road. Tomamu Station sits beside the resort and hotel shuttles meet arriving limited-express trains.
Kiroro is another realistic western Hokkaido option, with rail access via Otaru-Chikko followed by taxi or rental car; seasonal airport coaches have also operated in winter. Farther east, New Furano Prince Hotel places the drive from New Chitose at about 133 km and 132 minutes, making Furano reachable without travelling through Sapporo first.
CTS works especially well because travellers can choose between direct ski coaches, JR services, private transfers and rental cars. Winter road conditions in Hokkaido can be severe, so drivers should use appropriately equipped vehicles and allow extra time during snowstorms. Overall, New Chitose is strongest as a high-connectivity Hokkaido ski gateway serving several major resort regions rather than a single nearby mountain.
