Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV) is one of the most useful airports for ski trips into northern and central Vermont. Located in South Burlington, it gives travellers a much shorter final journey to many Green Mountain resorts than larger New England gateways farther away. Rental cars are available inside the terminal beside baggage claim, while taxi, car and charter services provide alternatives for travellers who do not want to drive immediately after landing.
Stowe Mountain Resort is one of the clearest ski transfers from BTV. Stowe gives the airport-to-resort journey as about 40 minutes, mostly on interstate roads. Smugglers’ Notch is another strong option: the resort lists Burlington International Airport at approximately 35 miles or 45 minutes away. These short transfers make BTV particularly attractive for travellers focused on northern Vermont rather than combining skiing with a larger city break elsewhere in New England.
The airport also works well for the Mad River Valley. Sugarbush describes itself as only about an hour from Burlington, while Mad River Glen gives a driving time of 59 minutes from Burlington. Both areas are reached south of the city via Interstate 89 before the final mountain-road section. Winter conditions can change quickly, so drivers should check Vermont road information before travelling and allow extra time during snowfall or freezing conditions.
Farther north, Jay Peak remains realistic from BTV. The resort publishes Burlington International Airport as an official transport hub and gives an approximate transfer time of 1.5 hours. Jay Peak also offers pre-arranged resort transportation, although advance notice is required and pricing should be checked directly before booking.
BTV is therefore especially useful for ski trips centred on Stowe, Smugglers’ Notch, the Mad River Valley or Jay Peak. Its main advantage is not simply airport size, but the concentration of well-known Vermont ski areas within manageable driving distance. Travellers heading to southern Vermont should still compare Albany, Boston or other regional airports, because Burlington is strongest for the northern half of the state.
