Avalon Airport (AVV) can be a useful alternative arrival point for ski trips in Victoria, particularly when its flight schedule or fare is more attractive than Melbourne Airport. It sits between Melbourne and Geelong, about 55 km south-west of Melbourne CBD and around 20 km from central Geelong. That location makes Avalon convenient for western Melbourne and Geelong, but it is important to understand the geography before choosing it for a snow holiday: Victoria’s major alpine resorts are to the north-east and east, so AVV does not usually shorten the final road journey to the mountains.
Mount Buller is the closest of the major Victorian ski resorts to Melbourne, with the resort giving a road distance of about 248 km and around three hours from Melbourne. Falls Creek lists Melbourne at 391 km and about 4.5 hours, while Mount Hotham gives roughly 380 km and 4.25 hours on its main Melbourne route. A journey starting at Avalon will normally involve additional travel from the west side of the metropolitan area before joining the routes towards these alpine destinations, so travellers should compare the full door-to-resort time rather than airport distance alone.
For most ski itineraries from AVV, a rental car offers the greatest flexibility. Major car-hire companies operate from the arrivals hall, although counters may only be staffed for advance bookings. Avalon also has SkyBus services meeting major flights for travel to Melbourne Southern Cross, plus local Route 18 buses to Lara Station. Seasonal snow coaches can depart from Melbourne and, on some services, Geelong, but there is no reason to assume a direct ski transfer will meet every Avalon flight; schedules and ski-equipment policies should be checked before booking.
Winter road rules are also important. Mount Buller requires vehicles to carry wheel chains during the declared snow season, Falls Creek requires chains to be carried in winter, and Mount Hotham requires diamond-pattern chains to be carried and fitted when directed. AVV is therefore best treated as a fare-and-schedule alternative for Victorian ski trips rather than a dedicated alpine airport. Melbourne Airport or Albury can be more direct for some resorts, depending on the destination and available transport.
