Asahikawa Airport (AKJ) is one of the most useful arrival points for ski trips in central Hokkaido. Its position southeast of Asahikawa puts travellers close to several very different winter destinations, including Furano, Kamui Ski Links and Asahidake, while avoiding the longer onward journey from New Chitose Airport for many central-Hokkaido itineraries. The terminal has bus and taxi services outside the arrivals area, and airport information identifies direct bus connections towards Asahikawa city, Furano, Biei and Asahidake.
Furano is one of the clearest ski options from AKJ. New Furano Prince Hotel gives the road journey from Asahikawa Airport as about 60 km and roughly one hour by car. The regular Furano Bus Lavender service runs via Furano Station to the hotel, with a published journey time of about 78 minutes. Furano Ski Resort itself offers two linked zones and 28 trails, making AKJ a particularly useful airport for travellers whose main destination is Furano rather than western Hokkaido.
Kamui Ski Links is another important option. The ski area is around 30 minutes by car from Asahikawa city and has operated a seasonal direct airport bus taking approximately one hour between AKJ and the slopes. The airport also publishes Asahidake at roughly 50 minutes by bus, giving experienced winter travellers access towards the Daisetsuzan area as well as conventional lift-served skiing. Seasonal timetables should always be checked before booking because winter bus services can change between seasons.
AKJ works especially well for travellers building a central Hokkaido ski trip around Furano, Asahikawa or the Daisetsuzan area. Rental cars add flexibility for multi-resort itineraries, but winter driving conditions can be severe and appropriate tyres and local road advice are essential. New Chitose remains the larger gateway with a broader flight network, so the best airport choice depends on flight availability, fare and the final resort rather than airport size alone.
